Retiring from the Early Sunday D&D Game

Image
Hey all, things have been shifting around pretty unpredictably for awhile now. I'm afraid Sunday morning D&D isn't going to work with my schedule any longer and I'm going to drop from the game. It's been great and I've enjoyed playing with all of you. If things change in the future I'd be happy to come back. I'll leave the DnDBeyond campaign up so you all can continue to use it, but I won't be at the table for the foreseeable future.

Easter - No D&D Today

Image
The adventures of both Thergale the Verdant and Walton Glaives have been put on hiatus for this Sunday so that everyone can spend time celebrating the Easter holiday in whatever fashion they will. I will be going to visit my in-laws where we hope to eat chinese food and enjoy each others company. Happy Easter! If you're into that sort of thing. Happy Sunday, if you're not.

Early Sunday D&D: Thergale #006

Aaron is in the house and ready to bring the new campaign world to life. Eric is back. Ben and Alison are missing, but not gone? So I'm told. A couple new faces are at the table, Nate and Joshua. Best of the news is that I found my notes for the last couple sessions, so I can add posts for the last three sessions.

Early Sunday D&D: Christmas Break

Image
The new adventures of the less powerful Thergale the Verdant are on something of a holiday hiatus. Apparently, no one wants to play D&D on the morning of Christmas Eve. I mean, not that I could pull that off without getting more than a little static from my wife. I get it. It's cool. I kinda suspect that our DM will cancel the New Year's Eve game as well, but only time will tell. At this point it's still on the schedule. I did a thing for the group that I didn't run by the DM. In the spirit of asking forgiveness rather than permission, I created a DnDBeyond campaign for the group and posted a link to it in our Discord. I let everyone know that it'd be helpful for the DMs game prep to have all of our characters in one place and as an added bonus I shared all of my DnDBeyond content with the members of the campaign. At this point there are four characters in the campaign. Hopefully, everyone will take advantage of the tool. But not everyone wants to mix digital to...

Early Sunday D&D: Thergale #005

Image
Something has occurred that is most disturbing, I have lost much of my power. I don’t mean politically, not the influence of my network, or even that my servants have turned against me. Rather, and more disturbingly, my powers and abilities have atrophied. I have lost access to half my spells and even those I still recall are weaker and less effective. Misty Escape has failed me and both my Eldritch Sight and the Thirsting Blade are out of my reach. I have tested the connection with my patron, the Verdant Mother of the Dawn, Queen of Fairyland,  Lilliane, and found it true and strong. Yet, something has happened for which I can not yet find an explanation. Is it this world? This new beginning? Something more sinister?  The gnome is gone on church business. My agents confirm that he was seen taking a carriage out of the city three days previous. It would be a comfort to learn if he has experienced the same degradation in power or if this is a more personal dilemma. It mat...

Early Sunday D&D: No Session, DM OoT

With our Dungeon Master, Aaron, being out of town the Early Sunday D&D campaign is on hiatus this week.

Early Sunday D&D: Thergale #004

Image
Much has occurred since last I had opportunity to update this record. I stepped to the circle beneath the Black Monastery with a cadre of companions to gather reconnaissance and decide a course of action against the Returnal. That is no longer a concern I hold and is a decision I can have naught to do with, as some instability in the magics of that circle, sabotage, or wild chance have thrown me once again across the multiverse.  Much has changed and little of the familiar remains. I find myself on yet another world, beneath a strange sky, the sole companion remaining me is so changed and unlike himself as to be another persona entirely. The remainder of my fellows are lost to the winds of fate. But I am here. I am alive. Still, I feel the presence of my bond to the Verdant Mother of the Dawn. By blade, wand, and force of personality I have rebuilt myself on this new world. I shall persevere and blossom, as do I always. My gnome companion, Brock, is the sole member of our band to h...

Early Sunday D&D: Sick Day

Image
I was planning to go to the game. I was looking forward to it on Friday morning and said as much on our Discord server. But things did not go as planned or as desired. By Sunday morning I was not feeling well. Sick as a dog. Unable to make the game. The game was canceled. Which is good for me, but bad for the game. It's been a long time since the group has gotten together. Apparently, the turnout was low and they decided not to play. So that means the story hasn't advanced and our big decision is still needing to be made. Destroy the floating base and everyone in it, around it, and probably below it... or take our chances fighting this ever growing fleet of airships and the people behind the trouble. How will we balance this equation. How great is the cost in lives now versus the cost of the lives in the inevitable future? Whatever will we do? Let's look again at our hero and distract ourselves from these unpleasant choices. Instead, let's look at the pact between Therg...

Early Sunday D&D: Canceled

Image
Fate has smiled on me and upon our hero, Thergale the Verdant. I was not going to be able to make the game session today, what with my being in our nations capitol taking in the sites and experiencing the full bosom of our democracy. The game was scheduled to go on without me and without the noble leadership and guidance of our favorite fae blessed warlock. But, alas, turnout was low and the session was canceled. I feel for my fellow gamers, it is a sad day when the dice do not roll, but this does assure that I will not be left out of the major decision that sits upon the shoulders of our brave band of adventurers. This does, however, offer us yet another chance to delve a bit deeper into the persona that is Thergale the Verdant. Is it true, for example, that on his own world our hero began his career as something of a charlatan? Thergale has always had a way with people. Knowing what makes them tick, teasing out their hearts’ desires after but a few minutes of conversation, and with l...

Early Sunday D&D: No Session

Image
Early Sunday D&D is on hiatus while our illustrious Dungeon Master is out of town, possibly traveling the world in search of inspiration for our continuing adventures. The adventures of Thergale the Verdant on this strange foreign world will continue, but during this break lets hear from our hero and learn a bit more about this powerful warlock. Thergale the Verdant Human Male, Chaotic Good, Warlock/7 Thergale the Verdant is an adult human male, 32-years-old, 6 feet tall, and 175 lbs in weight. His hair is a warm honey red-brown and his eyes a bright verdant green. He wears his hair nearly to shoulder length and sports a full beard and mustache, both of which he keeps neat, trim, and clean. He is fond of the color green, warm brown leather, and the flash of gold. His lifestyle, dress, and manners are those of a man of wealth who aspires to gain title among the aristocracy. " I came from nothing. I am the product of ale and opportunity. Children making children, conceived on di...

Early Sunday D&D: Thergale #003

In-Character Log: Thergale #003 09/17/2023 I have traveled to a sky full of different stars and yet if one just looks up, without seeking familiar patterns and ignoring the great band in the sky, the night is the same. Stars are stars. Worlds are worlds. People are people. And the people in question, known here as the Returnal, are looking to draw blood, force battle, and consolidate power. My companions seek to stop them, to match the power of their flying battleships with the spark of a shattered deity. What we saw within the circle tells a tale that time is short and the enemy far more advanced than we suspected. I have been transported here and I must make decisions that I can live with, we go to find a piece of the shattered one. We go to find a new hope and a path forward to match the Returnal. We enlisted the aid of the frostriese astronomer and he transported us upon his cloud. Much time was saved and we are in debt for this aid, less so for his singing. Hopefully, we will...

Early Sunday D&D Holiday Break

Image
There will an interruption in the continuing  adventures of Thergale the Verdant this week. The group is not meeting because of the Labor Day holiday. We shall reconvene gameplay on the 17th of September and I will of course keep you advised regarding your favorite warlock. This works out nicely for me, because I will be out of town leading up to the holiday and I did not think I would return in time for the game. After all, I'm not due back at work until Tuesday morning. :)

Early Sunday D&D: Thergale #002

Image
August 20, 2023 I have not returned home. I am a traveler on a strange, far flung world. I am using all my skills to appear capable and competent, but I have little grasp of the situation I’ve found myself entangled in. Celestials, sparks, and returnals. The momentum of my companions and the play of events carries me ever forward. I can only harness that energy and use it to make a place for myself. After stopping the attack on the Black Monastery my traveling companions and I were invited in to take food with the monks and get some rest after our ordeal. Also, I think I mentioned a giant. Everyone has their own giant issues. I have a strong suspicion that the stew was generously flavored with bandit. Unsurprising given the remote location of this place, dark countenance of the place, and the lack of crops or livestock in the area, but still an unpleasant realization come upon too late. From here on out, bread shall make up the totality of my sustenance. The meal did not seem to have a...

Early Sunday D&D: Thergale #001

Image
08/06/2023 One moment you're hosting the biggest, best birthday gala yet, talking with the mayor, and thinking that all the sacrifices have quite possibly proven their worth. Suddenly, the night sky disappears, swallowed by the light of a single star, then oblivion. When next you gather your senses you are adrift in a sea of black, slowly falling toward an unrecognizable world, faster and faster, and finally you are deposited in a snow bank dressed in your celebratory finery and freezing your ass off. Things did not start well. Detritus from my home was scattered about, along with a few unfortunate guests whose fall had not reached nearly so auspicious an end as had mine. I retrieved my blade from the former mayor and turned to discover that solitude was not to be a worry. An elf unknown to me, save the briefest of greetings at the gala, climbed from a deep drift of snow and drew steel as I approached. Violent. I noted, more decidedly, that he was holding the purse of one Purcival ...

Early Sunday D&D: A Meetup Group

Image
I've joined another Meetup group playing D&D. This one meets in the morning, hence the very on the nose name of the group, Early Sunday D&D. Playing at Schuler Books from 10am to 2pm, which gives me an hour between this game and the Random Encounter group playing at Out of the Box . After asking about any special character creation rules, level guidelines, and house rules that I might need to know, I was told to go wild and not be afraid to get creative. Level up to 6th level and everything else will be explained at the game. I suggested a dwarf barbarian or human warlock. And I made a dwarf barbarian that I was looking forward to playing. Of course the follow-up message said they already had a barbarian and the warlock would avoid overlap. Warlock it is. And so I have birthed from my fertile imagination and the D&D core rules, Thergale the Verdant, a human warlock with an Archfey patron and sworn to the Pact of the Blade. DM Aaron has only recently taken over this gro...
